King Concrete Seattle

Concrete Paths and Walkways in Seattle, WA

Connect Your Outdoor Spaces with Style and Function

A well-constructed concrete walkway provides a safe, functional route throughout your property & enhances your landscaping design. King Concrete Seattle installs walkways & paths that can withstand the elements of Seattle’s weather as well as complement your home’s architectural style & be dependable for you for decades.

For over 15 years, I have poured walkways all over King County. The key to having paths that don’t crack and settle and ones that will last is knowing the local conditions of where you are building. Clay soils shift and expand in Seattle; Seattle receives a lot of rain, which requires good drainage; and freeze/thaw cycles require added support/reinforcement in our area.

With all of this in mind, we construct every walkway with the best practices in place (proper base preparation, adequate thickness, correct grading, quality finish work) so that when completed, they remain level and visually appealing for over 30 years.

Types of Concrete Walkways We Install

Standard Broom-Finished Walkways

High-traffic area standard. The texture of the broom finish provides a slip-resistant surface for Seattle’s rainiest days.

Examples of Applications:

  • Walkways to the front entrance.
  • Access paths to side yards.
  • Paths to utility locations.
  • Paths connecting other spaces in the yard.

Stamped Concrete Walkways

Stamps on the finished product create decorative patterns that mimic the look of stone, brick, or tile. The decorative stamps create a visually appealing aspect to the walkway, while still having the durability of concrete.

Examples of Applications:

  • Front entrance statements.
  • Paths through the garden.
  • Surrounding pools.
  • Paths from one entertainment space to another.

Exposed Aggregate Walkways

Decorative stones are exposed within the aggregate of the concrete. This produces a textured surface that will blend into your landscape.

Examples of Applications:

  • Paths through the garden.
  • Creating a naturalized landscape.
  • Pool areas.
  • Modern designs.

Colored Concrete Walkways

We can custom-tint the color of your concrete to either match your house color or provide an accent color to enhance your exterior appearance. The color is integrated into the concrete, so it maintains its color throughout its lifespan.

Examples of Applications:

  • Landscapes that emphasize style/design.
  • Commercial properties.
  • Modern houses.
  • Hardscape design that incorporates colors.

Concrete Garden Paths

We create paths for you to guide your visitors through your garden or landscaped area. Whether your path is winding or straight, we will create a garden path that complements your plants and provides easy access.

Examples of Applications:

  • Residential gardens.
  • Public spaces.
  • Botanical features.
  • Backyard escape/retreats.

Concrete Paths and Walkways Design

We can create customized pathways that are both visually appealing and functional, as well as considerate of other elements in the landscape (including architectural, landscaping, and utilities):

Architectural Design Consideration: The pathway’s design and shape should reflect your home’s architectural style. Examples include: curved organic pathways for a craftsman-style home, a geometric pattern for modern architecture, and a traditional path layout for a classic-style home.

Integration into Existing or Planned Landscaping: We will utilize the existing or planned landscaping when designing our pathways. Pathways will blend through the existing or future gardens, connect different areas of the yard, and enhance the entire design of your yard.

Planning the Functionality: Planning of the width, location, and routing of the pathways is determined by traffic patterns and how you intend to use them. A wider front entry walkway than a garden path is typical. Different design considerations exist for utility access than decorative route walkways.

Safety Planning: Ensuring proper slope for drainage and accessibility, adequate lighting, slip-resistant finishes, and unobstructed sightlines at intersections.

We provide concrete pathway/walkway design solutions for your specific property and needs.

Concrete Paths and Walkways Construction Process

  1. Site Evaluation: The site evaluation involves a preliminary assessment of the site’s current grading, the drainage pattern, the type of soils present at that site, and any obstructions such as pipes, utilities, or other underground features. This information will help us determine the maximum possible depth of the excavation and the required thickness of the base layer for the walkway.
  2. Walkway Layout and Staking: To create an accurate layout of the walkway, we mark the location and path of the walkway along with its width and radius of curves. After we have completed staking the location of the walkway, we meet with the client to confirm its accuracy before commencing the excavation.
  3. Excavation: Excavating to the correct depth (usually between 6″ to 8″) is required to provide adequate room for both the base material and the desired thickness of the concrete.
  4. Base Construction: A compacted gravel base is used to stabilize and drain the walkway area. Due to Seattle’s clay-based soils, an aggregate base is required to prevent settlement of the walkway area.
  5. Setting of Form Work: Form work is used to define the edges of the walkway and to ensure that the walkway has been built to the correct width. During form setting, we also establish the proper grade for water to run off from the walkway.
  6. Reinforcement: In order to help prevent cracking, wire mesh or fiber reinforcement can be placed into the concrete mixture. Based upon the width of the walkway and the anticipated usage of the walkway, we select the most suitable reinforcement for each individual walkway project.
  7. Concrete Pouring: The concrete mixtures are poured into the excavated area, using the selected strength rating for the specific application. Adequate consolidation of the concrete will eliminate air pockets (voids).
  8. Finishing: Once the concrete has cured to a sufficient hardness to handle tools, we can begin the process of creating the desired finish on the surface of the walkway. These finishes include broom finish, smooth finish, stamped finish, or exposed aggregate finish. When creating these finishes, we will ensure that the finished surface has the proper drainage slope.
  9. Control Joints: To control where cracks occur, we strategically place control joints in the walkway. Control joint spacing is determined by the walkway’s width.
  10. Curing and Sealing: After the concrete has developed the necessary strength, we apply quality sealers to protect the walkway from damage caused by excessive moisture, staining, or wear.
